Parliamentarians ask for biofuels universalization

Parliamentarians of 16 countries agreed on Wednesday (19) to ask for the universalization of biofuels and to work for the "isonomy" between biofuels and fossil fuels, regarding the liberalization of the international trade. Those are two of 12 commitments mentioned by the Letter of São Paulo, which was approved during the "Parliaments and Biofuels" seminar, held in the city.
Among the commitments are: promoting dialogue inside the parliaments to solve problems related to energy and environment, stimulating the use of biomass as a source of energy, and to strengthen the policies of sustainable development, with the increase in the use of biofuels.
There are also the commitments of creating policies to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, "respecting the economic and social differences in each country", and to create a permanent international parliamentary forum to discuss policies for biofuels and sustainable development, with the organization of annual meetings.
Obama
During the seminar, American deputy Elliot Engel said - in a speech through videoconferencing - he is optimistic about biofuel policies to be adopted by president elect Barack Obama. Answering to a question made by senator Eduardo Azeredo (PSDB-MG), he reminded the commitment of the president elect with the reduction of oil dependency in his country.
- Everybody is anxious in Washington with the definition of an agenda for the next year. Besides the economic crisis, we believe that health and energy issues will be at the top of Obama’s agenda - foresaw Engel.
According to the American deputy, the reduction in oil prices in the last weeks should not be considered a reason to return to the "old bad habits." On the contrary, he suggested, the search for alternatives to replace oil must continue. Engel believes that Brazil realized the importance of being energy independent earlier than other countries. Brazil and the United States, as he said, should work together to achieve that goal.(Agência Senado)
